“In the sixties, Clairtone’s Project G stereo was the epitome of bachelor pad cool. It transformed the traditional console box by cantilevering its speakers outside the Scandinavian-style modern cabinet. It won a silver medal at the 1964 Milan Triennale, the international design industry’s most prestigious exhibition, and was adopted by progressives within the arts and entertainment community. Frank Sinatra endorsed it, and G series models appeared in films such as The Graduate with Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman and A Fine Madness with Sean Connery. Hugh Hefner bought a unit for the Playboy Mansion and jazz legend Oscar Peterson claimed that his music sounded as good on a Project G as it did live.” – DC Hiller and Daniel LeBlanc Visit Clairtone.ca for loads of great details and information.

I would like to know what the value of a Clairtone Project G Stereo today?
DCSeptember 6, 2006
Very nice Project G! The value of this unit ranges with the model and condition. The condition is very important as the perforated aluminum speaker globes are very fragile and almost impossible to repair. There are a few distinct models of the Project G: a T4, 2000, 7000 and the T10 (pictured here), while the exterior of all the Project G’s look the same the interior varies depending on the model. The earliest ones (these being the T4 units from 1963) are the most sought after, The later 1965 T10 (as pictured above), while still collectable, is not as desired. Again, hard to price but a recent online sale had the T10 unit in great shape sell for 950 US$. Hope this helps! DC

I have a pair of the globe speakers that were included with the G2 system, but they are mounted on oak stands rather than the metal stands I have seen pictured elsewhere. I do not actually have the console system. Were oak stands ever offered by Clairtone as an accessory or option, or are these more likely a homebuilt accessory?
clairtoneMay 13, 2007
The G2 speakers were available to buy separately for $90 each as replacement speakers for the Clairtone G2 or with an optional $25 cast aluminium base for extentions speakers or a regular speaker set for the G2 component console. The speakers jacked into the G2 console or into the cast aluminium pedestal base which you could then run wires from to your G2 unit. Oak stands would certainly have been a custom home job.

I have a Project G. As my father was involved with Clairtone management, her was able to acquire the second one off the production line. The first one went to Mr. Munk. Do you have any idea of the value of this unit. – Thanks –

D Jones, Are you related to Ray Jones? I’m writing a book about Clairtone and would love to talk to you.
"Dollar" BillNovember 30, 2007
Cool to find people related to Clairtone here. Looking for more info on the G3 as there has been one in the same spot in my parents house, pre my birth. Used to have great fun as a kid covering the rear port on the speakers and creating enough compression to make them “fart” after the music stopped.
JeffJanuary 5, 2008
Hello….I just purchased a G2…i’m curious to know where I might find a speaker replacement, as one speaker is torn, and rattles when played. Also, is the black covering leather or vinyl? Did these units come with a tape player-(mine does not). Thank you much for any info!
N MunkJanuary 9, 2008
“Dollar Bill”: The G3, introduced in late 1966, was the last in Clairtone’s famous G series. It was also the smallest of the Gs and the cheapest. It was an attempt by Clairtone to adapt to the changing hi-fi market, from big stereo cabinets that looked liked pieces of furniture, to smaller, and less expensive, component pieces. The G3 sold for $499, and came with with a matching bar cart on wheels. Jeff: When you say your G2 speaker is torn, what exactly do you mean? The G2’s “sound globes,” the round black balls on either end, are made of cast aluminum. Are you referring perhaps to the actual speakers inside the “sound globes”? As for the black covering you mention, again, I’m pretty sure there is no leather, or vinyl, on the G2. Project G, shown in the photo at the top of this page, does have black vinyl sides, however. Hamilton: While Clairtone’s Project G and the G2 are fairly valuable, I’m afraid most of the company’s other models, including your Baroness Stowaway, aren’t of much interest to collectors.
JeffJanuary 10, 2008
Hi…Thanks for your response….My unit is identical to the one pictured above…I removed the (pair) of perforated metal speaker covers….the outer one is black- the inner one is natural aluminum, and the actual speaker is damaged…..any chance of finding a replacement? Or will any speaker suffice? Thanks, Jeff
DCJanuary 16, 2008
Hi Jeff, Speaker cones used inside the the Project G sound globes were a Wharfedale Super 10/RS/DD, 10-15 ohms – this is a great sounding full range speaker and you can periodically find them for sale online. However, a pair of matched Super 10’s can be a bit pricey – averaging between $250-$350. There are photos of the Project G’s and their interior at our site <http://www.clairtone.ca>. Also, there is a book by Nina Munk and Rachel Gotlieb being release in May of ’08 called, ‘The Art of Clairtone’ and a concurrent show at the Design Exchange in Toronto.

I have a G2 that my wife and I bought in 1967 as our first piece of furniture. It is in good condition and still works. The tuning bands have dried out and I can no longer tune the radio portion of the unit. Are there replacements or someone who specializes in repairing these beautiful units.

I have a G2 and G3. While the G3 and satellite speakers are mint, unfortunately, someone “upgraded” the components in the G2. I have purchased 3 Garrard Lab 75’s (later G2 turntable), a Lab 80 (early G2 turntable) and a Lab 95 (close enough) from Ebay. Unfortunately all have arrived damaged, so I need to find someone to repair at least one of them, but at least I have an “original” turntable for my G2. However, in 6 years, I have been unable to find the T10SH (original G2 tuner) or T14 (later model G2’s) tuner/amp that was original to the G2. If anyone has any info. as to where I could possibly find a replacement, I would be eternally grateful. I am at wit’s end, considering the possibility of simply mounting a studio monitor amplifier and a car stereo (so the unit could play CD’s) into the chassis. I’d rather keep everything original, but like I said, it’s been 6 years and I’ve been unable to find an original tuner. You can see photos and find what little information I’ve been able to compile at <http://studioartefakt.com/g2>

I purchased it new in Burlington Ont. from Swarbrick & Forrest Furniture in 1964 (I believe, have to look up the receipt.) It still works but I am about to re-due it. Had a Garrard Lab 80 changer, speakers on Aluminum Stands. Have the original instructions etc. I see you recommend Eric Belanger for the electronic work (FM Tuner drive slips). Can you recommend anyone to recondition the Lab 80, I have picked up a spare for parts if needed. I have taken loving care of it and want to bring it back to new condition. Thank you Rod

I have a early G2 , the speakers have become qiite dented in a few spots. Can the speaker be opened up and the dents hammered out?
DCJune 6, 2008
To Richard: G2 speakers are made from cast aluminium so they very difficult to dent. However, the Project G speakers are very easily dented. Is it possible for you to send me a photo(s) of your stereo via email to confirm which speakers you have? I have opened and ‘un-dented’ a few Project G speakers and it is a very delicate process. Just saw the display at the Design Exchange and it brought back memories of youth, Avro Arrow, Jiger, Clairtone, when it looked as though Canada was going to asseme technological leadership. The G models were eulogized; I was disappointed to learn that David Gilmour disliked the beautiful traditional consoles, for I thought that they were the most tasteful on the market, as did our parents who wrote the cheques. Our Baroness Stowaway model 734 is in its original position in the living room and is sounding fine.

KarenApril 1, 2010
Roger, Is it the G3 with the solid metal bases (T11) for the speakers or the wire type metal base (T13). Thank you
DCApril 6, 2010
Actually Roger – the G3 came in many variations – from the brochures and factory information I have – the T11 (1966) was the amp model placed in both the G3 with the speakers on aluminium pedestal bases (sometimes called the ‘mini-G’ and the model with the chrome wire rings speaker supports. The G3 with with the chrome rings usually came with a stand unlike the ‘mini-G’ Both versions were also used when the amp model was updated to the T13. One of the final amp models released by Clairtone was the T16 / T17 which was only used in the G3 with the stand and chrome ring speaker supports. Price range varies with model. DC

Hello Clairtone Community Does anyone know how many G2’s were manufactured (approx)? Thanks in advance… Michael
DCFebruary 19, 2011
Hi Michael, There’s no clear number on the amount of G2’s sold. Unlike the Project G’s that were numbered, the G2’s were not. Broad estimates has it between 1000-2000. Many more G2\`s were sold than the Project G mainly due to the fact that is was less than half the cost. interestingly, perhaps because is was cheaper, not a lot were saved by their owners making it a pretty hard to come by item now. Best, DC

recently started a major restoration on my G2. it was Cosmetically in ruff shape, all the metal had been painted by hand with a bush and the wood was gummed up with a poorly applied lacquer. Mechanically it was in good shape and sounded great. so far the restoration is going very well. Cleaned and Re powder coated the metal parts , stripped and refinished the wood. Brought the aluminium parts back to original condition. Its going to look like new when done. In order to powder coat we needed to take the globe speakers apart. We lost the image reference photos we took of the speaker wiring. I believe we have rewired them correctly but I was wondering if anyone had a speaker wiring diagram to be sure. regards [gareth@leef.ca](mailto:gareth@leef.ca)

Glad to hear about the restoration – sounds like a lot of work! Not sure if this is what you’re after but here’s a basic G2 wiring schematic: <http://www.clairtone.ca/g2_speakers_cs.jpg> DC

Hello all, I’m looking to buy a G3 in very nice condition, mechanically and cosmetically. Pedestal base or chrome ring speakers, but not especially looking for the “bar cart” package. Much appreciated if you have any leads. Regards, David [dmh01956@aol.com](mailto:dmh01956@aol.com)

Hello Clairtone Lovers I am inquiring about what paint to use on a pair of G2 speakers that need restoration. I have seen other g2 speakers and they look like a very dark gray, not a true black. Did Clairtone produce more than one shade of black for the G2 speakers? Thanks for any insight. Best Regards Paul

I am looking for a project g or g2 in any condition. If I need to rebuild I can do so. My father once sold them in his stereo shop in Guelph Ontario. He still has a guy that can help me fix it up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just saw a g and a g2 at a show. the g sounded amazing; it was modified so you could stream from an iPod or iPad. the g was $42,000 and the g2 was $28,000.

I have a Project G in a poor shape in Holland (Europe). My father bought it in Canada and shipped it to Holland. Are there any people in Europe who want to buy one? I still have the brochure that came with it. The record plager is missing.

I have owned and enjoyed my G2 for years. However, after recently moving to a new home, my G2 has acquired what sounds like a short in the sound. It worked quite well before the move, but now there is severe static on the sound from all inputs – FM, radio and record player. I was wondering if this was a familiar problem or if you could recommend someone in the Toronto area that might be able to fix this.

We have a Clairtone Project G2 for sale. It is most likely from 1967 or 68, and appears to have the T10 receiver. It is located at my parents’ house outside New York City. It has been in storage for several years and currently does not power on. However, it was never tampered with, and all the original parts are there, so it should be possible to bring it back to life with the right know-how. Please contact me with questions, for photos, etc.
